FAQ
Psychotherapy is a broad term used to describe talking therapies, including counselling. Both counsellors and psychotherapists provide a service for those looking for support and treatment for a wide range of mental health and emotional concerns. The possibility that there is a difference between counselling and psychotherapy is debated in the field of mental health. Some claim that counselling tends to tackle problems at the time of the crisis, whereas psychotherapy focuses on longer-term psychological problems resulting from our past, as far back as our childhood. Coaching on the other hand, is focused on the present and future. Coaches help you to identify goals, leverage personal strengths and take action. Some may argue that counselling is coping oriented while coaching is action oriented. I use elements of counselling, psychotherapy and coaching tailoring my service to your individual needs. Whether you choose a counsellor or psychotherapist or a coach to help you, the most important thing is that you choose the individual that feels right for you.
There are the following, general categories used in psychological therapies which I employ in my work with clients; cognitive and behavioural therapies- these focus on cognitions and behaviours, psychoanalytical and psychodynamic therapies- these focus on the unconscious patterns that originated in childhood, humanistic therapies- these focus on self-development in the present and arts therapies, which use creative arts within the therapeutic process. For more details of the therapies I use, please visit the modalities page.
Only you can decide this, but if you are finding it difficult to manage your emotions or to cope with day-to-day life you may benefit from professional help. Just talking to someone confidentially who is not a friend or family member can make all the difference. Counselling allows you to take a regular time for you to explore your feelings and talk about any problems you’re experiencing. A counsellor can help you develop better ways of coping, allowing you to move forward, get new skills while discovering your existing strengths and get the most out of life.
Usual therapeutic hour is 50 minutes long.
Like many counsellors and psychotherapists, I offer weekly sessions, however, this can flexible depending on the type of therapy and your personal requirements. The length of therapy vary between clients and depends on their presenting issue and the outcomes they hope for. You are fully in control of deciding when to end therapy but I ask for a minimum of a week’s notice to ensure we have an ending session for the client’s benefit.
Private therapists charge for their time and expertise. You can find out my charges by scrolling down on this page. There are charities and other organisations which offer free or a reduced rates sessions. These may vary depending on your location and circumstances. Your GP can refer you to NHS services which offer therapy free of charge. If your employer offers an Employee assisted programme (EAP) at work, counselling sessions can be free of charge, but you will need to check this with them directly.
The Initial consultation of 30min is free. Subsequent sessions online are £45/hr for regular sessions. I offer concessions for the key-workers, students and those on low income. Please reach out to me directly to discuss your individual circumstances.
